Today’s New Age has brought about a revolution in the life of old age. New age Senior Citizens have started to live their life to the fullest. Over with all the worries of getting somewhere, and having completed the responsibilities of bringing up children, they have started to live their life with joy and independence.

Mr. A, a senior citizen, retired as principal of a High school, 60 years old, used to live with his wife and children (two daughters and two sons). Their grown up sons want  them to move to their plush apartment in a prime locality, but Mr. and Mrs. A do not want to do it. They are very happy at their one room flat in Ghatkopar, where they have spent most of their life and have most of their friends. They desire their freedom & privacy.

The above is not an isolated example – there are several new age pa and ma who stay on their own , away from their children, and are yet quite happy and satisfied as they engage in different social activities, join clubs, and enjoy this golden period of their life. They prefer to meet their children and grand children during weekends, festivals or extended visits/ family get together. They prefer privacy even at this age and love to spend quality time with their partner.

In old days, there were no clubs, no gyms and no scope for special activities for elders, but now there are several social clubs, yoga centers, recreational health clubs which most of the elders join and spend time. They don’t splurge on this, they spend prudently, but they do get together in afternoons for tea, they do go on outings once in a while, they do arrange parties and they do enjoy life as much as today’s young generation, but in their own way.

“Grey in hair, young at heart” is the new mantra for today’s senior generation.
